The 34-year-old Serb made it into the final at the Masters Series tournament in Paris with a 3: 6, 6: 0, 7: 6 (7: 5) win against the Pole Hubert Hurkacz and thus secured the record. In the final on Sunday he will face Daniil Medvedev from Russia. He was “just proud and very happy,” Djokovic was quoted in a message from the player organization ATP.

Djokovic shared the record so far with the American Pete Sampras, who had finished the season as number one for six consecutive years from 1993 to 1998. Djokovic was already in first place in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2018 and 2020 at the end of the year. The Spaniard Rafael Nadal (2008, 2010, 2013, 2017, 2019) and the Swiss Roger Federer (2004 to 2007, 2009) succeeded in doing this five times.
