The US Democratic Party has received a record amount of donations following the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Just yesterday, the day after her death, some 71 million dollars was transferred, or 60 million euros.
According to ActBlue, the Democrat collection platform that released the figures, there is a clear link between the death of the progressive judge and the wave of donations. “It’s inspiring to see people take action to honor her legacy,” said director Erin Hill.
Senate
Democratic voters fear the fallout from Ginsburg’s death because President Trump is likely to want to replace her with a more conservative judge. In that case, the Supreme Court will move further to the right.
The Democrats are therefore very keen to reclaim the majority in the Senate from the Republicans in the November elections. The Senate can block a nomination by the president.
15 million
Yesterday, according to ActBlue alone, some $ 15 million was transferred to a fund to support Democratic Senate candidates. Before Ginsburg’s death, the counter for that fund was 3.5 million.
It is still unclear whether the old or the new Senate will consider the nomination of the president. Trump has said he is want to hurry, but the Democrats want to lift the nomination over the election.
