  • “The huge fires we have been fighting lately have been ignited by terrorists,” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was quoted as saying by the local Hurriyet newspaper.

The head of state said that the authorities in Ankara have identified members and supporters of the Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK), which has been declared a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union, the United States and other countries around the world. “Some of these people have been arrested and others have been declared wanted,” he said.

Erdogan added that in the past eight days, 187 forest fires have broken out in our southeastern neighbor, 162 of which have been extinguished.

“Thousands of firefighters, military and police, assisted by volunteers, have been mobilized in firefighting operations. 29 planes and 59 helicopters have been used to put out the fires,” he said.
