Recently discovered, this species of marine sponge was named by a 9 year old boy

Hitekno.com – New species sea ​​sponge newly identified in off the north coast of Norfolk was named by a 9 year old girl.


Sponge according to purple in color and resembles the dumplings are named Parpal Dumplin.

The name Parpal Dumplin was suggested by a boy from Langham Village School in north Norfolk named Sylvie.


The panelists who chose the name liked the naming that was given by Sylvie.


According to Claire Goodwin, a sponge expert, he believes that Parpal Dumplin is becoming a new species in science, in the sub-genus of sponges known as Hymedesmia (Stylopus).

“We need to look at the specimens kept in museums to understand how many Hymedesmia (Stylopus) species exist in the UK and how they differ from this new species,” Goodwin said. Evening Standard, Thursday (15/4/2021).


Proyek Marine Conservation Society give the sponge a generic name that can be used until it has its scientific name.


Sponges help keep seawater clean by filtering food and eating small particles of floating food.


It is recorded that there are more than 11,000 different species of sponges worldwide.
