Recent Studies Reveal People Deficient in Vitamin D Are Vulnerable to Infection with Covid-19

Suara.com – Recent studies reveals that people are deficient Vitamin D, 60 percent more risk of contracting the corona virus (Covid-19).

Vitamin D itself has an important role in the immune system, promoting the health of T cells and macrophages, which are actually useful for fighting infections.

It should come as no surprise, then, that previous research has documented an association between low vitamin D levels and the risk of high-grade respiratory diseases, such as asthma, tuberculosis, and viral infections that attack the lungs.

Even so, Vitamin D alone is not enough to protect people from exposure to Covid-19. A new study from the University of Chicago shows that Covid-19 is more susceptible to attacking people who are deficient in Vitamin D.

It is true, those who are deficient in Vitamin D, but who still receive medical care, are less likely to be positive for Covid-19. However, the study authors cautioned that it would require clinical trials to prove whether increasing vitamin levels would help prevent viral infections.

Therefore, the researchers studied the relationship between Vitamin D and Covid-19 in a group of respondents who were predominantly non-white. Negroid race in this study dominates with a percentage of 68 percent.

Among the group that had a lot of Vitamin D, 12 percent tested positive for the coronavirus. While nearly 20 percent of those with low Vitamin D levels tested positive for Covid-19.

The results of the Chicago researchers’ study contradict a British study published last month which concluded that there was no link between vitamin D deficiency and coronavirus infection.

However, the blood samples used to determine these differences were taken 10-14 years prior to the study (and stored in the UK Biobank).

“The link between Vitamin D deficiency and Covid-19 is very strong, especially recently we analyzed vitamin D levels,” said study co-author Dr David Meltzer. Daily Mail, Sunday (6/9/2020).

“Could it be real? I think it’s possible. Scientifically, we want to do a randomized trial to show whether Vitamin D reduces the risk of Covid-19 or actually increases the risk,” he concluded.
