Immediately after the Midsummer holidays in Kurmena, the St. Peter’s Day celebrations began. This time the festival is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the church and will last a whole week, but the preparation for them has to some extent started the rebirth of Kurmene.
Count Pēteris Komorovskis, the founder of the Kurmene Catholic Church, once founded the tradition of celebrating St. Peter’s Day in Kurmena. This year’s festival is special, both because the White Church is celebrating its 150th anniversary and because during the year, under the leadership of Dean Andrejs Mediņš, it has undergone extensive transformations.
“For a lifetime, I didn’t expect it to be in church. I was thinking how to insulate their church, and then put the heated floor. It is incredibly complete that the church is warm, ”says the parish elder Ilgonis Mašinskis.
Important things have already been done, points out Andrejs Mediņš, the dean of St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in Kurmene: “Many buildings are also [esam] preserved, and slowly began to rebuild everything as we see the church, the rectory, and the park, which, thanks to our great Latvian friends, we have begun to rebuild. ”
Kurmeniete Sarmīte Ķīse admits that at the beginning many were skeptical about the planned works: “Madness, the trees have been cut down, what is happening here now. But there were specialists, and really only the damaged trees and those that were dangerous were cut down. Now no tree fell in the biggest storm for us. ”
As a surprise to everyone this year, Peter’s Day guests are also greeted by a fair so commonplace elsewhere. It is located in the historic market square and will take place three times a year.
“It simply came to our notice then. It is important to see and meet people, ”says Ināra from Kurmen.
The Kurmene school building, which was renovated almost ten years ago and immediately closed, is also experiencing a revival.
For at least the next four years, while the premises in Skaistkalne will be repaired, a girls’ school will operate here.
“Girls will learn what a real girl – a woman – needs to know. A variety of useful things, from cooking to cooking and handicrafts. We want to help girls grow into women who are aware of their value in life, their value in the family, ”says the director of the future school Agita Krastiņa.
The renovation of the school is mostly welcomed by the locals, only the knitters, who had been given one room in this building, are a little sad.
Kurmenė Ināra says: “Maybe there could be old people there.” In turn, Kurmenė Malda notes: “This is one of the options, but I would like to have a house of craftsmen there.”
According to Andrejs Mediņš, the energetic dean and leader of the blessing community of Brukna Kalns, many good things have been started, and there is still a lot to be done.
The most difficult thing is not to build and create, but to return the joy of life and faith in a better future to the people of Kurmen.
