TV 2 has previously mentioned that Dour Verett is being criticized for insinuating that the Norwegian royal couple are racist in the fresh Netflix documentary “Rebel Royals”.
Now he is once again being criticized for accusing royalty of racism, but this time we have to move over the Skagerrak.
In the same documentary, he makes a statement about an incident that should have happened during a royal dinner in Denmark, which causes experts in our neighboring country to react.
Great focus on racism
Table of Contents
In a segment of the documentary about the racism Verett he thinks is a victim of, he says:
– There are days when I go into deep depression. It is not easy when you are bombarded with 2,000 messages that reach you down.
He points out that he has received both heat and murder threats on social media, including “Ill Kill That Black Fuck” and “Princess and the Slave”.
– It’s not easy when people are racist to me, says Verett, and emphasizes:
– That I am the first black man in the European royal family is very difficult for people.

Then he begins to talk about a situation that arose during a royal dinner party.
– I remember when I was at a royal dinner in Denmark. One person said to me: “Do you see all the pictures on the wall? Your family comes from Africa, right? ” I answered yes. He then said, “All these people made your family slaves. How does it feel? ” Who says something like that?!
TV 2 has asked the Danish royal house if they want to comment on Verrett’s play. They have not responded to TV 2’s repeated requests.
The Danish historian and author Lars Hovbakke Sørensen tells TV 2 that he does not have much to spare for how he has entered the Danish royal family in the documentary.
– When you think about what Direk Verett has otherwise said over time, it is very difficult to take his statements for good fish. They say more about Direk Værrett than about the Danish royal house.
Nor does Sebastian Olden-Jørgensen, who is a history lecturer at the University of Copenhagen, appreciate the statements to Verett.
– This is an extremely imprecise claim: an unspecified dinner at an unspecified time in an unspecified room (where royal portraits are supposedly hanging), where an anonymous person asks a meaningless question, because how can one claim that “all these people” slave band Durkret’s family? It is very difficult to take this seriously, and as a historian I must say that the credibility is low.
– Although the content of the story is unclear and unreliable, the purpose is quite clear. History should show that Direk Verett is surrounded by tactless racists looking down at him and insulting him – perhaps without completely being aware of it, but it does not make it the least better. He is a victim!
PARALLYS: The Danish royal house expert believes that Dour Verett is trying to compare their situation with what Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had when she became part of the British royal house. Photo: CBS
Olden-Jørgensen believes that Verett is trying to draw lines to the situation in the UK and Meghan Markle.
– In this way, the story is very similar to Meghan Markle’s story that a person in the British royal house, during her pregnancy, made a tasteless, racist remark on her skin color and Prince Harry’s future children. As in the case, the point was that the “stupid comment” was nothing isolated or personal, but revealed a universal racism in the British royal house, he says, and continues: continues:
– The same applies here: The anonymous remark “reveals” somewhat deeper and wider. Furthermore, in Durk Værrett’s case, one can speculate on whether this “person” is royal – perhaps even the current King Frederik X. The imprecise form encourages you to fill in the details yourself.

Netflix is silent
Netflix has no background information about the story that should have taken place during the Danish royal dinner. The incident is not commented on over the rendered quote over, and it thus becomes hanging in the open air who expressed the words.
Netflix has not answered TV 2’s questions as to why it was cut like this or whether the Danish royal house was given the opportunity to defend itself in the documentary.
Verett is also informed that his statements are attracting attention in Denmark. He has not answered on TV 2’s questions in this case. Among the questions are when and where this event took place.

Unsure when the situation happened
Verett has previously stated to Online newspaper That he received a somewhat similar comment on during a royal wedding in Copenhagen in 2019.
“They said my family was weak and told me about how their family was responsible for my ancestors’ slavery,” he told Nettavisen.
In the documentary, he says that the conversation happened during a dinner with historical pictures on the walls, while in the Nettavisen interview he must have explained that this happened during a wedding.
It is therefore far from certain that the situation he is talking about in the documentary is the same situation that he talked about to Nettavisen.
-If you search the web a bit, you find out that there is possibly an episode from a wedding in 2019 on the outskirts of the royal family, namely between Princess Alexandra of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg and Greve Michael Ahlefeldt-Laurvig-Bille. At that time, Durk Verrett expressed that the person who harassed him was not a member of the royal family. By the way, this wedding found a place in Svendborg on Funen, says Olden-Jørgensen to TV 2.
Dense ties: There have always been close ties between the Norwegian and Danish royal house. King Harald and Queen Margrethe are three -minded. This photo is from 1993. Photo: Lise Åserud / NTB
He says this opens up for two options:
– 1) Either it is the same episode, which in “Royal Rebels” has been shortened and told in a way that makes it far more royal – yes, so you almost get the impression that the racism is found in the Danish royal house. 2) Or there is talk of a new episode that Durk Verett has not told about before. I want to consider 1) as most likely, partly because I have a hard time imagining that he has been invited to some really “royal dinner”.
Olden-Jørgensen questions why Verrett wants to tell such a vague story that implies the Danish royal house in this way.
– Perhaps the answer simply is that the story emphasizes a point he wants (that he is a victim of racism), but which he cannot prove in any other way (for example, through statements from the Norwegian royal house or experiences in Norway).
There is one thing Olden-Jørgensen is absolutely sure, and that is that the Danish royal house does not like this attention.
– The Danish royal house is hardly satisfied with Durett Verett’s remark, but the statement, on the other hand, is also very imprecise, difficult to take seriously and impossible to react to, so they will probably ignore it and quickly forget it.

Not the first time
The fact that Verett talks about racism and royalty is not a new phenomenon that has arisen with the documentary.
In a two -hour podcast with the name «Quite Frankly» Has Værrett previously said that the royal family is racist.
In the episode, he blames the law of Janet, and believes that “everyone” talks himself down. The 49-year-old states that “everyone is racist without knowing it himself”.
To find out if Märtha Louise had racism in him, he claims to have performed a trick on her.
– I did a trick on her, to see if she had racism in her, and of course she had it. After all, she is part of the royal family, and the royals are the biggest racists of all. They are the “original”, they live in a bubble and have zero understanding of it.
At that time Durk Verrett’s manager’s statements like this Opposite TV 2:
– Durek here tried to highlight and shed light on how historical actions, where royal families invade land and colonize them, today can be understood as symbols at a time when racist attitudes and practices were very widespread, said manager Simon Eriksen Valvik at the time.
