Realme GT Kicked from AnTuTu for Cheating Benchmark Results

Jakarta

Cellphone vendors are competing to produce flagship phones with fierce performance that can top the list of benchmarks such as AnTuTu. There are even some who have been caught cheating to get the highest benchmark results, such as Realme GT recently.

Before Realme GT was announced, Realme VP Xu Qi Chase uploaded a screenshot showing the benchmark results of 770,221 points in AnTuTu version 8. That figure is higher than most phones with Snapdragon 888 stuck at 710,000 points.

Even the official figures from Qualcomm only hit a score of 735,439. The AnTuTu team waited until the Realme GT was sold and bought a unit to be tested, the results of which were then uploaded to their Weibo account, as quoted from GSM Arena, Thursday (18/3/2021).

The AnTuTu team bought a unit with a 12GB / 256GB configuration because RAM capacity and internal memory had an effect on benchmark results. They managed to get a score of 750,000, but on further investigation they found two issues.

AnTuTu found Realme GT holds multiple threads that should run on small CPU cores until they can run on large cores. This results in a higher benchmark score.

In addition, Realme GT also modifies the JPG images used by AnTuTu for the UX test. AnTuTu found the Realme GT bypassed some JPG decompression processing and instead displayed a low-quality image to reduce processing time.

Because of this, AnTuTu decided to remove the Realme GT from its benchmark list for three months. If Realme changes the software on its cellphone to operate normally, the Realme GT will be allowed to enter again. Otherwise, Realme GT will be banned permanently.

In his statement, a spokesman Realme said the benchmark results were accurate and they didn’t break the rules. This Chinese vendor also discussed with AnTuTu to resolve this issue.

Meanwhile, the AnTuTu team is developing a version 9 application which will have an anti-cheat feature. So if the app detects cheating, the benchmark points will be deducted from the final result.
