Defending champions Real Madrid have been eliminated from the Spanish Football Cup. The Royals lost in the round of 16 to city rivals Atlético Madrid 2:4 (2:2, 1:1) after extra time.
This means that Real’s first title of the season is gone. In the Champions League round of 16, the second-placed team in the Spanish league will face Bundesliga team RB Leipzig. FC Barcelona had only a few problems in their 3-1 win in the cup away to Unionistas Salamanca.
In regular time, Atlético took the lead twice through Samuel Lino (39th) and Alvaro Morata (57th). Real came back with an own goal from keeper Jan Oblak (45th + 1) and Joselu (82nd).
In extra time, the French former world champion Antoine Griezmann (100th), who was honored before the game as the club’s record goalscorer, scored first. Rodrigo Riquelme made everything clear (119th). At Real, Antonio Rüdiger was in the starting line-up and Toni Kroos came on as a substitute in the second half.
