What has long been announced is now almost reality: the supermarket chain real is about to be sold and, as it appears, is also about to be broken up. For 40 branches in Germany, it should be the final end.

After the first buyer had jumped off Redos, another investor has now opted for real found: the SCP-Group has agreed to buy together with the real estate investor X-Bricks.

Supermarket chain Real is on the verge of being destroyed: 10,000 jobs at risk

However, the future owners only want to continue operating a small part of the real markets themselves. The majority is to be resold to other dealers such as Edeka or Kaufland. Some locations are also threatened with closure, a total of 40 are in the works.

It has not yet been announced which are exactly affected. However, the works council fears that around 10,000 jobs will be lost.

The head of the general works council, Werner Klockhaus, warned on Tuesday that the planned sale of Real would jeopardize almost every third of the 34,000 jobs still available at the Metro subsidiary. “The general works council expects about 10,000 unemployed,” he said.

40 branches are to be closed

The closure of the 40 shops, which is expected in the course of the reorganization alone, threatens around 6,000 jobs. Another 4,000 jobs could be lost in the specialist departments of the continuing operations and in the central administration.

However, Metro boss Olaf Koch does not expect this. He emphasized that the group had already agreed on social security with the works council for all Real employees who lost their jobs despite all their efforts due to redundancies. This means that the company will live up to its social responsibility beyond the sales day.

The deal should be ready by the general meeting

Metro now hopes to get the deal under wraps by the general meeting on February 14th.

Of the 277 locations, only around 50 will continue to operate under the Real logo. All others are to be sold to, for example, Kaufland and Edeka.

According to media reports, Kaufland alone wants to take over around 100 branches. (Fb / dpa)
