RC Genk says goodbye to John van den Brom | Football

sport">Van den Brom was at the helm of RC Genk for over a year, which took over from FC Utrecht in the interim. His position was already under pressure at the beginning of this calendar year, but then Van den Brom managed to start on the way up and end the season well with a second place and cup win. Earlier this season RC Genk already had a bad run, after which the club management decided to say goodbye to Dennis Haar, Van den Brom’s assistant, and to appoint the seasoned Dane Glen Riddersholm as his new assistant.

sport">That was already a sign on the wall for the weakened position of Van den Brom, who did not survive a new disappointing series. In a statement, RC Genk says: “The club management has made this decision because the results are not in accordance with the qualities of the players’ core and with the ambitions that we have expressed together this season.” Riddersholm, who became Danish champion in 2015 with FC Midtjylland and won the Danish Cup in 2020 with SøndersjyskE Fotbold, will temporarily take over the sporting leadership of RC Genk together with Domenico Olivieri.

sport">In recent weeks, the Belgians shot themselves in the own foot again and again. Despite a great dominance in the field and countless opportunities, expensive points were lost against the low-flyers Cercle Brugge (1-1) and Beerschot (2-0 defeat). In the diptych with Club Brugge, RC Genk gave it up completely twice. In the league match against the reigning champion, it led to 2-1 against Bruges reduced to ten men until twelve minutes before the end, but then RC Genk still lost 3-2. In the cup match a few days later, RC Genk led 3-2 until the 89th minute, after which Charles De Ketelaere still scored the equalizer and Van den Brom’s team would eventually lose out from the penalty spot. Against KV Mechelen, the last game led by Van den Brom, RC Genk again failed to use a numerical majority.

Seventh place

sport">RC Genk is seventh with fifteen points behind leader Union Saint-Gilloise and six points behind number 4 Anderlecht. To reach play-off 1, in which the battle for the national title is settled, a club must finish in the top-4.

sport">For Van den Brom it is the second dismissal in his coaching career. He was previously sacked in his second season with Anderlecht, after winning the championship with the Brussels club in his first season. Van den Brom was also head coach of AGOVV Apeldoorn, ADO Den Haag, Vitesse, AZ and FC Utrecht. With AZ he reached the cup final twice, but was unable to win it. He also reached the cup final with FC Utrecht, but it would never be played due to the outbreak of the corona pandemic. Van den Brom managed to qualify for European football with ADO Den Haag (once), Vitesse (once) and AZ (four times).
