RB «Leipzig» footballers reach the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time in history / Article / LSM.lv

The Leipzig team, which debuted in the German football league four years ago, reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the first time in the club’s history on Thursday. In the quarterfinals of the “Leipzig” tournament in Lisbon, the Spanish club “Atletico” from Madrid was defeated 2: 1.

Madrid head coach Diego Simoene left Alvaro Morat and Joao Felix out of the starting lineup, setting high hopes for midfielder Markos Llorente’s attack. Atletico also could not help striker Angel Korrea and defender Shime Vralsko, who were infected with Covid-19.

The Leipzig team, on the other hand, is not helped by Timo Werner, who has moved to London’s Chelsea. In addition, the team’s head coach Juliāns Nāgelsmans did not include striker Ēmils Fošbergs in the starting eleven, who scored half of the team’s last eight goals in the Champions League.

The front line of attack of the German club was Yusuf Pulsen, Dani Olmo and Christopher Nunkunk.

In the first half, both teams attacked equally dangerously, but the result of the game did not change. The game was close to savage at times, and Olmo’s Marsela Sabicera picked up a pass coming in from the right and chipped it past the away team’s keeper.

Seven minutes later, Felix came on the field, who lived up to his expectations, earning a penalty of 11 meters in the half. Portugal were punctual and scored 1: 1 in the 71st minute.

However, as the regular time drew to a close, Leipzig won. After 88 minutes, Anhelino’s Tyler Edams found the back of the goal with a beautiful free kick. Like Felix, the young American Edams joined the game in the second half, coming on the pitch.

Founded in 2009, the Leipzig Club is the youngest UEFA Champions League semi-finalist ever. The Leipzig team started their way to the top in the regional championship, which is the sixth largest league in Germany. With the rich investment of sponsor Red Bull, the unit climbed the ladder of the German football hierarchy and in 2016 made its debut in the Bundesliga.

It has already been reported that Saint-Germain in Paris became the first quarterfinals on Wednesday, snatching a 2: 1 victory over Bergamo’s Atalanta. PSG will be Leipzig’s opponent in the semi-finals.

The remaining two quarter-finals will feature Barcelona, Munich’s Bayern, and Manchester’s City, Lyon’s Olympique.

The UEFA Champions League quarter-finals will take place in Lisbon from 12 to 15 August. There are also semi-finals on August 18 and 19 and a final on August 23.

The final was originally scheduled to take place in Istanbul, but the Turkish city has been awarded the title match for next season. In mid-June, UEFA decided that the winner of the Champions League would be determined in the final tournament in Lisbon.
