RB Leipzig before signing Hwang – 19th deal with Red Bull Salzburg

19. RB-Deal

RB Leipzig is facing the first signing for the coming season. As reported by the South Korean public broadcaster “KBS”, Leipzig and sister club Red Bull Salzburg are said to have agreed on a transfer from striker Hee-chan Hwang. The 24-year-old would be a replacement for Timo Werner and the 19th player, who is moving from one of the Salzburg teams to Saxony. For the nine professionals alone, who have so far been transferred from Salzburg to Leipzig’s first team, transfers totaling more than 90 million euros flowed. Hwang would break the 100 million mark.

Rumors of a change have been around for some time. As a transfer fee for the Korean, whose contract will expire in Salzburg in 2021, 10 million euros are under discussion. English champions Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers had also expressed interest, according to the report. Efforts in the winter failed, however, because Salzburg did not let Hwang go after the departure of the top talents Erling Haaland (Dortmund) and Takumi Minamino (Liverpool).

The fast attacker has already gained experience in Germany. In the 2018/19 season, the 32-time international was loaned to second division Hamburger SV, but was thrown back several times due to injuries. This season Hwang established itself as a regular player in Salzburg, scored eleven times in the Austrian Bundesliga and three times in the Champions League.

Hwang next expensive Salzburg departure? – Record earnings in 2019/20

Salzburg loses top executives every year who qualify for larger clubs in Austria. For this season alone, the departures from Haaland, Minamino or Munas Dabbur have generated revenues of over 115 million euros. A record for the club, who could soon add 16-goal striker Hwang to the departure list.

But even in the previous year, when Amadou Haidara went to Leipzig, Salzburg already generated sales of over 60 million euros. In the 2016/17 season, for example, with the departure of Naby Keïta to Leipzig, it was even EUR 73.55 million, and in 2014/15 Sadio Mané (Southampton) or Kevin Kampl (BVB) also came close to the 50 million mark. -Brand (overview of all Salzburg transfers by year).
