Raul Castro resigns from the position of Cuban Communist Party leader / Article / LSM.lv

Raul Castro, the leader of the Cuban Communist Party, has announced his resignation.

With the announcement, 89-year-old Raul Castro made the party at the opening of the Congress. He said he was stepping down with the feeling that he had fulfilled his mission.

His decision officially ends the 60-year rule of the Castro family in Cuba, which began with his older brother Fidel.

“Nothing forces me to make this decision, but I zealously believe in the power and value of the example, as well as in the understanding of my compatriots. Let no one doubt – as long as I live, I will always be ready to defend the country, the revolution and socialism with greater force than ever before. Long live a free Cuba, long live Fidel! ” said Raul Castro.

For the first time since the 1959 revolution, Cuba will be officially ruled by someone other than the Castro family.

No significant changes are expected in the near future, and Raul Castro is expected to retain political influence.

He did not mention in his speech who could take his place as party leader, but had previously hinted that he supported the transfer of power to 60-year-old Miguel Dias-Kanel, who took over as president from him in 2018.

Dias – Cannel is a representative of the younger generation of loyalists who advocates economic openness without compromising the one-party system.
