After the autopsy, the RBINS hopes to have more clarity about the cause of death. The animal is probably lost, because the species does not normally occur in our North Sea. The mammal mainly feeds on deep-sea squid.
This is the seventh documented case of a common beaked whale in Belgium. “It is remarkable that this is the second animal of 2020”, it still sounds. “On January 15, a young female also washed up in Ostend.” The previous cases were from 1972, 1969, 1954, 1933 and 1835.
