The American battery manufacturer ONE (Our Next Energy) has developed the new battery. The collaboration with BMW has just started and a prototype of the iX with this battery will be ready during the autumn.

Then the testing starts on the road. The goal is for the car to reach a range of 600 miles – or 965 kilometers – before it has to be recharged. The hope is that the car goes even further.

In December it was completed tests with the new battery, called Gemini, in a Tesla Model S. During normal driving on the road, it managed 752 miles – around 1200 kilometers – before the battery was empty. This is about double what the Model S can do with today’s batteries.

Two batteries together

ONE was started in 2020 and is led by former Ford Motor Company veteran Mujeeb Ijaz.

He has been working on the development of the battery for electric cars since the 1990s. In addition to BMW, The company is funded by, among others, Bill Gates and Richard Branson.

The secret of what ONE is doing now is not so much developing a brand new battery. They are building a hybrid battery pack that consists of two different batteries. One is a “workhorse” that will take care of all the daily rides.

The second is a battery that will ensure good range when you go on a long trip. The chemistry of the two batteries is carefully tailored to the job they are to do.

Releases charging stations

The new battery will have a capacity of just over 200 kWt. In addition to long range, one of the advantages is that it uses less expensive raw materials such as lithium, nickel and cobalt.

A highlight

– I have worked with the development of batteries for 30 years. With the tests of the battery in the Tesla Model S, I think we have proven that we can make this happen. Seeing that the car just kept going and going, while the accompanying car with a petrol engine had to stop to fill the tank, was one of the highlights of my career, says Ijaz.

There is still a lot of testing and more obstacles before the battery can return to normal production. Our Next Energy, for example, tells no one how many years the battery lasts or how fast it can be charged. Nor has the price been talked about.
