TEHERAN Ibrahim Raisi will be appointed president Iran at the Parliament offices on Thursday (5/8/2021) afternoon. The inauguration of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s protege will take place in front of international officials from 73 countries.

His swearing-in ceremony came today after Khamenei on Tuesday officially marked Raisi as president in a ceremony attended mostly by Iranian domestic officials.

Tuesday’s ceremony was to mark Raisi’s rise to power, while today’s ceremony was more aimed at introducing her to the world.

Prior to Thursday’s ceremony, Iran even advertised that fewer domestic officials would be present to make room for foreign officials and due to restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic.

At Tuesday’s ceremony, Khamenei and Raisi made a large number of internal religious references that may be less prominent in today’s ceremony due to the presence of international guests.

Raisi had previously vowed to take steps to lift the “tyrannical sanctions” imposed by the United States.

It is unclear whether he will pursue a more conciliatory approach in front of global leaders or whether he will maintain his more confrontational approach to the West.

On Monday, the spokesman for Iran’s Parliament Seyyed Nezam Al-Din Mousavi had announced that 115 officials from 73 countries would attend Raisi’s inauguration ceremony on Thursday and many of them had arrived by Thursday morning.
