Racist assault in New York: two men sacked

A little over a week after the terrible assault of a 60-year-old Asian in New York, two men were fired for not coming to the aid of the victim.

Video of the attack showed that the two doormen had witnessed the scene from inside the building, without intervening. One of them even closed the door as the attacker fled.

Their attitude criticized

While the case aroused emotion, the attitude of the two men had been sharply criticized. So much so that the Brodsky Organization, owner of the building, had suspended them while they were investigating.

Residents of the building attempted to defend the doormen in an open letter, saying the CCTV footage “certainly misrepresents” their actions. Not enough for the owner, who felt they had “broken” emergency protocols and therefore fired them, according to CNN.

New York police shared a video and called for witnesses.

The 60-year-old Asian was attacked while walking down the street and hit on the ground, including on the head. The attacker also uttered racist insults. Hospitalized with a broken pelvis, the 65-year-old victim suffers from numerous injuries.

Two days after the terrible assault, the police – who had called for witnesses – arrested a 38-year-old man and charged him with assault “motivated by hatred”. The latter is not unknown to the authorities since he was imprisoned from 2002 to 2019 for stabbing his mother to death in front of his little sister, then 5 years old.
