‘Quite Severe’ Damage to Ukraine‘s Energy Infrastructure After Massive Russian Strike
KYIV, Ukraine – A large-scale russian drone and missile attack on Dec. 5 caused “quite severe” damage to Ukraine’s energy infrastructure,officials reported,leaving regions across the country grappling with disruptions. The assault,which lasted for hours,targeted multiple cities and regions,sparking fires and causing injuries.
The attack focused heavily on railway infrastructure, with a “massive shelling” reported in Fastiv, according to Oleksandr Kalashnyk, the head of the Kyiv Oblast Military Administration. President Volodymyr Zelensky described the attack on the railway station as “militarily senseless.”
Beyond Kyiv Oblast, fires broke out in a warehouse in Novi Petrivtsi and at a home in Bucha, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service. In Dnipropetrovsk Oblast,regional Governor Vladislav Haivanenko reported fires in several cities,including strikes on homes in Pavlohrad and local infrastructure in Kryvyi Rih. An 11-year-old boy was injured in Nikopol during the attack.The western city of Lutsk saw fires erupt in several food warehouses,while warehouses containing food and medicine also burned in Dnipro and Bila Tserkva in Kyiv Oblast.
Two women, aged 46 and 40, sustained injuries in the Vyshhorodskyi district, just north of Kyiv, with one hospitalized due to shrapnel wounds, Kalashnyk added.
Poland’s Air Force stated on social media that it scrambled fighter jets to protect Polish airspace in response to the prolonged attack on western Ukraine.
Information regarding the full extent of the damage and specific targets remained limited in some regions.
The strikes represent a continuation of regular Russian attacks on Kyiv and surrounding areas, occurring as the U.S.explores avenues to negotiate an end to the conflict. A previous mass missile and drone attack on Kyiv between Nov. 13-14 resulted in seven deaths and 29 injuries.
