Queensland Flu Vaccination Rates plummet Despite Extensive Advertising Campaign
Despite a meaningful investment of $675,000 in advertising the state’s free flu vaccination program, Queensland is experiencing alarmingly low uptake, with vaccination coverage for individuals aged 15 to 50 standing at a mere 18 percent.
Professor Kirsten Spann, director of the Center for Immunology and Infection Control, emphasized the critical need for increased vaccination rates, notably as the Brisbane Ekka, a major event that drew over 340,000 visitors last year, approaches. “the best thing that people can do is get a flu shot,” Professor Spann stated. She highlighted that the low coverage in Queensland mirrors a broader trend of reduced vaccine confidence observed post-COVID-19.
Professor spann clarified that while flu vaccines may not entirely prevent infection or transmission, they significantly reduce the severity of illness and can decrease hospital admissions. “If we can boost the levels of vaccine coverage, we will reduce hospital admissions,” she explained.
Addressing concerns about timing, Professor Spann assured the public that it is not too late to get vaccinated, as the flu season continues for another three months. Queensland Health‘s free flu vaccination program runs until the end of September. “We’re on an upward trajectory, which will probably continue through until the end of winter, unless we can get it under control through improved vaccination rates,” she added.
McDougall, a representative from Queensland Health, confirmed that free flu vaccinations are still available from over 2,500 community immunisation providers across the state and encouraged those who have not yet been vaccinated this year to do so. It is worth noting that Queensland Health’s initiative to offer free influenza vaccines at the Ekka, which was available for the past two years, will not be returning this year.
