Queen Paola opens up about unhappy marriage period

“In those ten years I was often alone,” said King Philippe’s mother in an interview with the French magazine Paris Match. “My life was a complete mess.” According to Paola, it threatened to lead to a divorce.

She felt “usually very sad”, until Albert once said “I have always loved you”. That pleased her, she says. “Unfortunately we can’t rewrite history, because I would love to redo that decade. Only now do I realize how important it is to show enough affection.”
