Former CAQ Minister Pierre Dufour Considers Liberal Party Offer After Regional Grievances
Quebec City – Pierre Dufour, formerly teh Minister of Natural Resources and Forests under Premier François Legault,is weighing a potential move to the Liberal party of Quebec, following his departure from the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) caucus. Dufour, who served during the CAQ’s first mandate, publicly expressed solidarity with ex-colleague Maïté Blanchette Vézina regarding concerns about regional depiction within the government, but stopped short of calling for Legault’s resignation.
Dufour’s openness to joining the Liberals comes after overtures from liberal Leader Pablo Rodriguez, who praised Dufour’s advocacy for the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region. This shift signals a potential realignment in Quebec politics as Dufour explores options beyond his current status as an independent MNA. The situation highlights ongoing tensions within the CAQ regarding regional priorities and could impact the balance of power in the Quebec National Assembly.
Rodriguez confirmed speaking with Dufour, stating, “I spoke with Mr. Dufour. Pierre, I have known him for a good ten years. I appreciate it very much. And when I saw the way he was treated by Mr. Legault because he was held for his region, I called him and we covered in a very friendly way.” Rodriguez’s office clarified Friday that discussions remain private.
Dufour himself indicated he is currently focused on fulfilling his duties as an independent deputy. He stated he would then assess potential opportunities with other parties, including evaluating their respective platforms. Rodriguez last week did not rule out recruiting Dufour, acknowledging what he described as the former minister’s “courage” in representing his region.
