Quarantine Colombia: can older adults go out to exercise?

In Decree 990 of 2020, the National Government released the guidelines for the new period of Mandatory Preventive Isolation that will last until the first of August. In this there are 44 exceptions that can be made effective by those who belong to them throughout the country. In these are those of older adults.

In the standard issued on July 9 the permit for the development of physical activities and outdoor exercise for adults over 70 years is included, for a maximum period of two hours a day, using all biosecurity measures, such as face masks and physical distance, and ensuring good handwashing when returning home.

Can older adults go out to exercise?

On July 3, the 61st Administrative Court of the Judicial Circuit of Bogotá, failed a guardianship of a group of people asking that those over 70 years they were given the same treatment as other people during the pandemic.

Given this, on the 6th of the same month, the Ministry of Health, the plaintiffs, the Institute for Aging of the Faculty of Medicine of the Javeriana University, the INS, the Colombian Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics and the Association of Scientific societies, but no consensus was reached.

For this reason, while the case is being resolved, for all purposes of developing physical activities, outdoor exercise and sports practice, adults over 70 years will have a restriction of their development for a maximum period of two hours a day, equal to that of people who are in the age range of 18 to 69 years.

How does it work in Bogotá?

In Bogotá the Mayor’s Office decreed quarantine divided by localities until August 23. At this time the locations in total isolation are Ciudad Bolívar, Chapinero, Los Mártires, Rafael Uribe Uribe, San Cristóbal, Tunjuelito and Santa Fe, in the other locations, the same measure will apply for adults over two hours of physical exercise daily when fresh air.

Recommendation in Medellín

In the quarantine for life in MedellínMayor Daniel Quintero indicated that this stage is dangerous for adults over 70 and called for wearing face masks even inside the home and asked them not to leave the house if it is not strictly necessary. Also, report any symptoms to 123.
