Katharina, Theodor, Amadeus, Samuel: Quadruplets were born on July 21 at the Inselspital in Bern. The mother is euphoric: «Everyone was there within four minutes. It all happened very quickly, »says the Aargau woman to BLICK. The birth was performed by caesarean section.

The parents had chosen the names of the children for a long time: “We knew exactly where which child was and whether it was a boy or a girl,” says the mother. Every child had its name before it even saw the light of day.

«Leaving one behind was not an option»
It was “exciting and terrifying at the same time” to learn that one expects four children at once instead of one, says the father. “Of course we were really happy.” But there were also risks of multiple pregnancies to be considered and whether all four children would survive at all. “During the first examination, we were asked which of the four should die,” says the father.

However, the incident would not have taken place in the Inselspital, but elsewhere in Switzerland. “When we heard that, we first had to swallow deeply.” For the expectant parents, however, it was clear from the start: “It was not an option to leave one of the four behind.” Today the proud parents are allowed to hold four healthy children in their arms. “I am overwhelmed. It is a huge miracle that all four are doing well, »says the mother.

Quadruplets still have to stay in the hospital
Daniel Surbek, chief physician of the Inselspital Women’s Clinic, confirms: “The four newborns are doing well according to the circumstances.” Still, they would have to stay on neonatology for a while. “We cannot yet say exactly when they can go home.”

According to Daniel Surbek, chief physician of the women’s clinic, 20 doctors and nurses were present at the birth. The mother had previously been cared for inpatient for several weeks.
