Q4 earnings decline of 2.9% for S&P 500 companies expected By Investing.com

Investing.com – Of the 143 companies that have reported Q4 results so far, 67.8% have beaten earnings expectations. This is shown by current evaluations by Refinitiv, a global provider of financial market data.

For comparison, the long-term average is 66.3% and the four-quarter average is 75.5%.

65.0% of the companies reported sales for the fourth quarter of 2022 that were above analysts’ expectations. For comparison, the long-term average is 62.0% and the four-quarter average is 72.8%.

Earnings in the fourth quarter of 2022 are likely to fall by 2.9% compared to the same quarter last year. Excluding the energy sector, earnings are forecast to fall 7.1%.

Fourth quarter earnings revisions 22

4 of the 11 sectors in the index should see an improvement in earnings compared to the fourth quarter of 2021. The Energy (NYSE:) (+59.6%) and Industrials (NYSE:) (+39.3%) sectors are expected to post the highest earnings growth rates for the quarter, while Communication Services (NYSE:) (-21.0%) sectors ) and Materials (NYSE:) (-20.6%) post the largest earnings declines compared to the fourth quarter of 2021.

Earnings development by sector

Sales in the fourth quarter of 2022 are expected to increase by 4.2% compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Excluding the energy sector, sales are expected to increase by 3.4%.

Revenue growth is expected for the quarter for 8 of the 11 Sectors. The Energy sector (+12.1%) reports the highest revenue growth for the quarter, while the Utilities (NYSE:) sector (-18.3%) reports the largest revenue decline compared to the fourth quarter of 2021.

The forward P/E of the index is currently 18.0.

In the week ended January 30, 107 S&P 500 companies report their earnings results.
