Putin’s constitutional reform validated at 77.92%

“Yes” prevailed with 77.93% of the vote in the national vote for the constitutional amendments in Russia, after a week-long poll which ended on Wednesday, according to data from the Central Election Commission of Russia .

“After the counting of 99.9% of the votes cast on Thursday, 77.93% of Russians support the constitutional amendments and 21.26% oppose them,” the central electoral commission said in a statement, adding that the voter turnout was 65%.

The national vote on the 206 constitutional amendments, initially submitted to the popular vote on April 22, had been organized for a week, from June 25 to July 1, notably integrating remote voting and electronic voting systems, in order to fight against the spread of coronavirus.

These constitutional amendments strengthen certain social guarantees, widen the powers of Parliament, introduce a certain number of restrictions for high-ranking civil servants (prohibition of having a dual nationality in particular) and establish the primacy of the Russian Constitution over the requirements of international law and the setting update of presidential terms after the election, allowing Vladimir Putin to run for two additional terms as soon as the amendments to the Constitution are adopted.

The Russian president had called on Tuesday all citizens to vote for the country in which they want to live, adding that these amendments, if supported, would consolidate the values of unity and justice shared by the Russians, in addition to the values family, access to care and education.
