Kremlin Agrees with Trump: G7 “Lost Practical Significance” for Russia
June 17, 2025 – In a surprising alignment, the Kremlin has echoed former US President Donald Trump‘s sentiment that excluding Russia from the G8 (now G7) was a “big mistake.” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated Russia agrees with Trump’s assessment [[1]], a position Trump reiterated at the recent G7 summit in Canada [[1]] and [[3]].
However, Peskov also asserted that the G7 has diminished in importance for Russia, citing the group’s shrinking share of the global economy and the rise of alternative forums like the G20. “Given the decrease in the share of the G7 countries in the world economy… G7 looks dim and rather useless,” Peskov explained [[1]].
Russia was originally removed from the G8 in 2014 following its annexation of Crimea and actions in Ukraine [[3]]. the G7 continues to address global economic issues and, currently, focuses on sanctions against Russia related to the ongoing war in Ukraine, with immobilized Russian assets remaining frozen until Moscow provides reparations [[2]].
