Putin Oversees Large-scale ‘Západ-2025‘ Military Drills Involving Over 100,000 Troops
Moscow, Russia – Russian President Vladimir Putin observed large-scale military exercises, designated ‘Západ-2025,’ this week, involving more than 100,000 military personnel, 10,000 pieces of equipment, and hundreds of aircraft and naval vessels. The drills, running from September 12 to 16, are being conducted across 41 terrestrial and naval training grounds in Russia and Belarus, including areas within the Baltic and Barents seas.
The exercises are framed by Moscow as “defensive” in nature,focused on rehearsing the protection of the State of the Union against potential aggression. Putin stated the operational plans are informed by experience gained from the use of armed forces in modern conflicts. The scale of ‘Západ-2025’ and the participation of multiple nations underscores Russia’s continued emphasis on military readiness and strategic partnerships, occurring amidst heightened geopolitical tensions in Eastern Europe and beyond.
The drills incorporate a significant arsenal, including 333 aircraft – encompassing transport, tactical, and strategic capabilities – and 247 surface ships, submarines, and logistical support vessels. Putin also inspected an exhibition showcasing over 400 weapons systems, including counter-drone technology, radar systems, precision-guided munitions, and aerial surveillance equipment.
Beyond Russian and Belarusian forces, contingents from India, Bangladesh, Iran, burkina Faso, Congo, and Mali are participating.Notably, 23 countries have dispatched observers to the exercises, including three NATO members: the United States, Türkiye, and Hungary.
“I hope it has been useful from the professional point of view. And from the point of view of establishing such a high level of trust among our countries, it has undoubtedly been,” Putin remarked, expressing gratitude to the foreign representatives in attendance.
