Putin and Merkel discussed gas transit through Ukraine

Merkel and Putin talked for almost three hours

Gas transit through Ukraine after 2024 will depend on supply contracts and the state of the GTS, and Nord Stream 2 is almost completed, the Russian president said.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, during talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, August 20, spoke in favor of extending the contract between Russia and Ukraine on gas transit after 2024. Merkel said this at a joint press conference with Putin.

As you know, the current contract expires in 2024.

In turn, Putin noted that the Russian Federation is ready to continue gas transit through Ukraine after 2024, but must understand how much will be purchased. The Russian leader said that he had assured Merkel of Russia’s full implementation of the agreements on Ukrainian transit even after she left the post of chancellor. TASS.

At the same time, Putin noted that gas transit through Ukraine will depend on supply contracts and the state of the GTS.

He also said that the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is nearing completion, and 15 km of it remains to be laid by sea.

“15 kilometers are left by sea, that’s all. It can be considered that construction is nearing completion,” Putin said.

According to him, the route for transporting gas to Europe via the Nord Stream 2 is 2,000 kilometers shorter than the transit route through Ukraine, and the project itself will reduce emissions five times during the transit of Russian gas to Europe.

Putin also said that the talk that the construction of Nord Stream 2 is a political process “is a delusion or an attempt to mislead someone.”

Also, Putin said that the topic of Afghanistan has become a priority during negotiations with Merkel.

It was previously reported that negotiations lasted almost three hours and passed behind closed doors. Ukraine was also discussed at the meeting.

We will remind, the German chancellor arrived in Russia with a farewell visit.
