It is a select group that is allowed to visit Bremen’s town hall every summer. Last year 63 students from the state of Bremen accepted the invitation. Shortly before, they had all reached the magic limit of 823 points. Whoever manages that can look forward to a flawless grade of 1.0 on the Abitur certificate.

There has been no sign of a so-called grade inflation in recent years: The average grade with which Bremen students complete their Abitur has hardly changed since 2015. In a comparison of the federal states, Bremen is in the middle of this ranking.

The favorite subject of the Bremen high school graduates

Traditionally, there are fewer discussions in other subjects. In general, mathematics cannot keep up with languages when it comes to the choice of advanced subjects at secondary schools. According to this ranking list, English is by far the favorite subject of Bremen’s high school graduates. After the autumn break, the graduates and all other students will go back to the facilities on Monday.

Even if many students in Bremen now leave school with their Abitur in their pockets, other degrees continue to play an important role. The number of secondary school qualifications has risen recently and is almost at the same level as the general higher education entrance qualification. The number of pupils who left the 178 general education schools in the state of Bremen without a qualification has risen again: last year there were 608, in 2018 the number was 564.

Measured against the population, according to the Federal Statistical Office, this is the second worst value nationwide – only Saxony-Anhalt has even more school leavers without a qualification.

In addition to the general education schools, there are 33 vocational schools in the state of Bremen. The majority of the vocational school students learn there in the dual system. This means that the students spend time – mostly in blocks – in the vocational school and in a company. According to the education authority, students can choose between 200 training occupations in this system.
