Pulmonologist Remco examines corona vaccine in Breda: ‘This is unique’

It is already very busy and yet they are taking some extra work in the Amphia Hospital in Breda. Together with five other hospitals in the Netherlands, they will be researching a new corona vaccine. “It is quite an operation,” says researcher Remco Djamin.

“It takes some work, but in the end it gives us more air,” says Djamin, who is also a lung specialist. He thinks it is important to contribute. “Vaccines are the light at the end of the tunnel. That’s what will save us. ”

‘Don’t gamble on one horse’
They do research in Breda continuously, but this one is special for Djamin. “This is unique. So much depends on this research, which is exciting. ”

This week, the first vaccines were approved administered. Yet many more vaccines are needed, also from other suppliers. “You don’t want to gamble on one horse. Maybe we will find out that one vaccine works better than another. ”

Thousands of volunteers
In total, two thousand volunteers are needed in the Netherlands, four hundred of whom will end up in Breda. Those volunteers sign up at the university hospital in Utrecht that directs the operation.

Half of all participants will receive a placebo and the others the candidate vaccine from the German CureVac. “We are curious whether those people produce enough antibodies. And it is just as important to see if there are no side effects. ” The first volunteer in Breda must receive an injection on 1 February.
