Puerto Rican Republicans participate in the National Republican Party Convention

The president of the Republican Party of Puerto Rico, Jenniffer González Colón, highlighted the resolution adopted by the Resolutions Committee of the Republican National Party (Republican National Committee or RNC for its acronym in English) to establish drug manufacturing as a public policy of the federal government on American soil. This resolution is in line with the initiative promoted by the congresswoman and the White House to bring these operations to jurisdictions of the United States, particularly Puerto Rico. This was reported by González through a press release.

“Both the White House, Congress and now the Republican Party at the national level are supporting ensuring the national chain of medical supplies, going hand in hand with my initiative that I have led since before the pandemic, to label pharmaceuticals as an issue. national security. With these expressions, the President’s Executive Order, the visits of White House delegations to the island, the filing of two projects of my authorship and supporting others as co-authors, we are creating a common front in an initiative in which Puerto Rico it has the attributes to lead the way and, eventually, become a national manufacturing hub for the benefit of workers and the local economy, ”said González Colón.

The approval of the resolution occurred during the celebration of the Republican National Convention and the Summer Meeting of the RNC that are held together in the city of Charlotte in the state of North Carolina. Puerto Rico is represented by a delegation headed by Kevin Romero, who serves as its Chairman, businessman John Regis, who was the Chairman of the Donald Trump campaign in 2016 and by José Carrión III, member of the Advisory Board of Latinos for Trump. The commissioner was scheduled to participate, but because she is taking preventive measures for the spread of Covid-19 by people with whom she had contact, she did not travel. For the same reason, the National Committeewoman Zoraida Fonalledas and the National Committeeman Luis Fortuño, excused themselves.

“All these meetings are important for the fight for the equality of our people. We will be working hard with the Republican leadership to enforce the will of the Puerto Rican electorate expressed at the polls in 2012, 2017 and in the plebiscite next November, consistent with the platform of the National Republican Party, “said Kevin Romero.

In addition, the RNC determined by resolution that they would keep the platform adopted in 2016 in force, in whose committee González Colón participated, managing to insert the support of the Republicans for the “right of American citizens of Puerto Rico to be admitted to the Union.”

The Republican platform states: “We support the right of the American citizens of Puerto Rico to be fully admitted to the Union as a sovereign state. We also recognize the historical significance of the 2012 local referendum in which 54% voted to end Puerto Rico’s current relationship as a territory, and 61% chose statehood over separate national sovereignty options. We support the referendum on political status authorized and financed by an act of Congress in 2014 to determine the aspirations of the people of Puerto Rico. Once the result of the 2012 local vote in favor of statehood is ratified, Congress must approve an enabling law that contains the terms for the future admission of Puerto Rico as the 51st state of the Union. “

On Monday, August 24, in compliance with RNC rule 37 (e), all delegates present and representing their states will cast their votes to confirm the nomination of President Donald J. Trump, as a candidate for reelection as well as the Vice President Michael Pence. From Tuesday onwards, the work of the Convention and the messages of national political figures will be carried out virtually and by the main television networks. On Thursday, August 27 at 8:00 pm, President Trump will make his message of acceptance of the nomination from the White House and in the presence of a small group of delegates, including those from Puerto Rico.

During the convention, the delegates from Puerto Rico have already held meetings with Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel and her Co-Chair Tommy Hicks.

The convention is held under strict health measures due to COVID-19, and the delegations have been limited to a very small group that carry proxies of all delegates.
