Publication highlights Wanda Vázquez’s restrictive measures against coronavirus

Washington – The Political publication today highlighted the governor Wanda Vázquez Garced for imposing an order earlier than other governors for citizens to stay in their houses most of the time.

But, he also stressed that Puerto Rico, although it has few positive cases of coronavirus, is one of the jurisdictions with the lowest rate of virus detection tests.

Placing it in sixth place among the first executives with the best reaction to the crisis, Politico stressed that Vázquez Garced was the first to order the closure of non-essential shops, schools and beaches, a night curfew and that citizens stay in their houses almost all the time.

But, he indicated that Vázquez Garced is at the head of a government with a “fragile” medical care infrastructure, especially after Hurricane María, and that Puerto Rico is particularly “vulnerable to the pandemic”. He mentioned, for example, the death of a 13-year-old girl in Vieques in January – where the hurricane devastated the only health center – with symptoms similar to influenza.

The Puerto Rico Department of Health has reported that deaths from the coronavirus number 11, while infections increased to 286. But, the result of 897 tests is still awaited.

Before Vazquez Garced, the publication ranked Ohio governors Republican Mike De Wine as the best responders to the emergency; California, Gavin Newson; Washington, Jay Inslee; Maryland, Larry Hogan; and Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer. The worst response, Politico argues, has been that of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

The publication also warned that Governor Vázquez Garced is in a fragile political position within her New Progressive Party.

“She rose to her position after the evidence surrounding acts of corruption forced Ricardo Rosselló’s resignation … But she was charged, while serving as Secretary of Justice, for failing to adequately investigate Rosselló. In January, it suffered another scandal when, after a series of earthquakes, unused emergency supplies were discovered in a warehouse. Now he faces a closed race for his party’s candidacy for a full term, a primary scheduled for later in the year, “added Politico.

Vázquez Garced, in a tweet, was happy with the praise for the restrictions he has imposed. So much so that he copied President Donald Trump in the message.

“The safety and health of our people is the priority. To my counterparts in the states, I say that social distancing and a curfew is the best weapon against # COVID-19, “the governor said in her tweet.
