KONTAN.CO.ID – SINGAPORE. The World Health Organization (WHO) stated, framing the decision to enforce lockdown to curb the new coronavirus versus reopen the economy, as the choice between public health and the economy is a “wrong” dichotomy.
“It is the wrong choice,” said WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in a video recording opening the National University of Singapore (NUS) Covid-19 Development, Thursday (17/9).
“WHO urges countries to focus on four important priorities,” he was quoted as saying Channel News Asia.
First, prevent large events that invite large crowds, such as stadiums and nightclubs, that have proven to be the source of the “explosive plague”.
Second, protect the vulnerable, save lives, and reduce the burden on the health system.

Third, educating the public about maintaining physical distance, hand hygiene, respiratory ethics, and the use of masks to curb the transmission of the corona virus.
Fourth, find, isolate, test and treat Covid-19 patients, and trace and quarantine their contacts.
“There are already many examples of countries that are effectively preventing or controlling their outbreaks by doing these four things, and doing them well,” said Tedros, citing New Zealand, Iceland, Senegal, Mongolia and Singapore as examples.
“The common theme in all these countries is a commitment to national unity and global solidarity,” he added.
