PS5, 12 hours to sell as much as PS4 in 12 weeks: Sony happy but also scared

It is well known: like the new RTX 30 from Nvidia or the rival Xbox Series X, the new PlayStation 5 is one of the most desired products of the year. Sony however, it has released some more details on the current statistics related to the presales of the next-gen console and, as expected, the numbers are impressive. The Japanese company declares that, in 12 hours, as many PS5s have been pre-ordered as PS4 in the first 12 weeks, at least for the US market.

PlayStation 5 conquers the USA … but will supplies be enough?

It is the same to spread these encouraging data Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, who in an interview talked about the first, incredible results obtained by PS5: “The demand expressed by the amount of pre-orders was very, very significant”.

We specify that the aforementioned statistics only concern the preorder, both in the case of PS5 and in that of PS4. It remains a rather relevant detail, we remember after all that Sony has sold more than 110 million PlayStation 4 from November 2013 to this part.

Ryan, however, also proved himself rather worried as regards the units available at launch: “It’s likely not everyone who wants to buy a PS5 on launch day will be able to find one.”. The president of SIE explains that his company is working hard to ensure sufficient supplies for the year-end shopping season. No wonder, therefore, that American retailers would have decided to cancel some of the pre-orders made by users.

Anyhow, PlayStation 5 will be available in the US and other countries on November 12. The Italians will have to wait for the November 19, the day when the next-gen console will be sold in two different versions, one with an optical drive (€ 499) and one dedicated to digital games (€ 399).

Among the launch titles we will find exclusives such as Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Demon’s Souls and ambitious third-party games such as Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and DiRT 5. Absent Cyberpunk 2077, initially scheduled for November 19 and postponed, a few hours ago, next December 10th.
