Protests against corona rules: fewer demo participants than expected

After the protests over the past weekends, demonstrations by critics of the Corona rules had been registered for Germany-wide today. In bad weather, fewer people came than expected in many places.

In many German cities, critics of the restrictions imposed by the corona pandemic have once again taken to the streets. The protests were mostly peaceful. Almost everywhere, however, significantly fewer people demonstrated than registered.

Several rallies were registered in Stuttgart, but the number of participants was “fairly manageable” compared to the previous week, as a police spokesman said. Some rallies therefore did not take place in the pouring rain. The previous weekend the nationwide largest protest had gathered in Stuttgart. Tomorrow the AfD may demonstrate against the corona restrictions despite an original ban in the state capital of Baden-Württemberg.

The demonstrations against corona policy announced in Bavaria literally fell into the water. According to the police, none of the four rallies originally registered in Munich were completed. The largest event on the Theresienwiese was canceled by the organizer shortly before the start in bad weather as well. Up to 1000 people were expected to attend the demo. Also in Nuremberg instead of the announced 500 people in rainy weather, only a few “sprinkled” were seen, said a police spokesman.

Rally at Berlin’s Victory Column canceled

In Berlin, the police were deployed with around 1100 officers to accompany demonstrations – they had prepared themselves for numerous protests against the corona restrictions and counter-demonstrations. In advance, more than 30 rallies were registered, the police said.

A rally at the Victory Column under the motto “Home and World Peace” had ended prematurely by the organizer himself, after the participants had not complied with the requirements, the police said. Only 50 participants were allowed, but there were probably almost 100. As a result, participants expressed their displeasure that there had been wrangling and “some freedom-restricting measures” on the part of the police. According to the Berlin Alliance against Right, right-wing groups, parties and organizations are clearly represented at the events against the Corona regulations.

Vegan cook Hildmann arrested briefly

The well-known vegan chef Attila Hildmann was arrested on the way to a rally at the Chancellery. He was accused of violating the Assembly and Infection Protection Laws, a police spokeswoman said. Hildmann was most recently noticed with the spread of conspiracy theories in the Corona crisis.

According to police, a large crowd had gathered around the cook at the pleasure garden. The impression had arisen that he wanted to start with them – but it was not permitted to use an elevator. The officials had informed him and announced measures. Hildmann had been released again. Emergency services would then have taken him to the place where he was holding a rally.

Human chain in Cologne

Demonstrators also took to the streets in several cities in North Rhine-Westphalia – here too, according to police, mostly fewer demonstrators than expected by the demo applicants. In Düsseldorf, around 70 people took part in a protest march, as a police spokesman said. Around 300 participants had been registered.

In Essen, around 360 of the originally 1,000 registered participants came together for a demonstration in a trade fair car park opposite Essen / Mülheim Airport. In Cologne, about 250 demonstrators gathered at the Deutz shipyard on the Rhine Bridge to form a human chain. In Aachen, participants had registered two events in the city center, in which, according to police, almost 130 people took part. According to police, around 60 people took part in a rally in Gummersbach. Accordingly, there were no disruptions or violations of the corona protective measures.

Counter demonstrations in Hamburg dissolved

In Hamburg, among other things, several hundred opponents of the Corona measures gathered in front of the Michel. There, several participants were warned by the police because they were traveling without mouth and nose protection, said a spokeswoman.

The police threatened the use of water cannons due to an unauthorized counter-demonstration with 120 participants. The gathering was then broken up with “water rain,” said a police spokeswoman for the AFP news agency. A demonstrator was arrested after bottle throwing at a police officer. Smaller counter-actions that have not been announced have also been resolved. Overall, the police spoke of a confusing but quiet location in the afternoon.

Peaceful protests also in other federal states

In Hesse, too, people took to the streets in several cities to protest against the restrictions. At a demonstration in Frankfurt under the motto “Hands off the Basic Law”, the police counted several hundred participants. There was also a protest against this event, which was somewhat smaller.

According to the police, around 130 critics met in Hanover by the afternoon. About 30 people spontaneously gathered for a counter demonstration. According to a police spokeswoman, around 170 people took to the streets in Bremen under the motto “Our basic rights guaranteed in the Basic Law”. Almost 150 people demonstrated against it. According to the spokeswoman, it remained peaceful.

In Erfurt, around 40 people demonstrated peacefully against restrictions on fundamental rights in the wake of the pandemic. A counter rally attracted around 50 participants.
