Protests ‌Erupt at Illinois ICE Facility Amid Closure Dispute

BROADVIEW,‌ Ill. – Demonstrations escalated Sunday at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility in Broadview, Illinois, as federal agents deployed pepper balls against protesters, according too reports and images from the‍ scene. The clashes occurred ‍as activists rallied against⁤ the facility, fueled by rumors of its impending closure-rumors ICE ‍officials have now denied.

The ⁤facility, located west ⁤of Chicago,⁣ has been a frequent target of protests from immigrant rights groups‌ advocating for⁢ an end to detention. The recent unrest stems from circulating claims ‍that the Broadview ICE facility would be shuttered, ⁤prompting celebratory gatherings that were met ⁤with a forceful response from agents guarding‌ the premises. ICE officials maintain the ⁤facility remains operational and that reports of its‌ closure are inaccurate.

On September 22, 2025, protesters gathered at the facility’s gate, voicing opposition to ICE’s detention policies. Witnesses reported agents warning demonstrators to clear the driveway before deploying pepper ⁤balls.⁣ The incident underscores the ongoing tension surrounding immigration⁣ enforcement and detention practices in the United States, particularly in the Chicago area, which has seen increased scrutiny of ‌ICE operations.

“We were⁤ peacefully protesting when agents started firing,” said one ⁣demonstrator, who wished to⁣ remain anonymous. “It was a shocking and ⁤unnecessary escalation.”

The Broadview ‌facility has a capacity ⁤of over‍ 700 beds and has been used to detain ⁤individuals facing ‍deportation proceedings. The debate over‍ its future reflects a broader national conversation about the role of ⁢ICE and the treatment of immigrants within the U.S. legal system.

ICE has not ⁤yet released a statement addressing the use ‍of ‌pepper balls, but confirmed that the facility‍ is not closing. The ⁤agency stated it is indeed committed to maintaining ⁣the safety and security of its facilities and personnel.
