Prosecutor: Salvini not to be tried in case of detention of migrants – Abroad – News

The case against Salvini dates back to August 2019, when he took up the post of interior minister and banned more than 100 illegal immigrants from disembarking on the Italian coast who had been taken at sea by the Spanish charity Open Arms.

The allegations state that Salvīni exceeded his official authority and “kidnapped” the people on board.

Salvini, for his part, points out that he has acted legitimately in pursuing a strict border control policy and forcing the European Union to take greater responsibility for tackling the problem of illegal immigration.

Salvini’s actions do not qualify as a criminal offense, he has not violated any international conventions and has acted with government support, prosecutor Andrea Bonomo told a court in the Sicilian city of Catania on Saturday, the Italian news agency ANSA reports.

The final decision on whether Salvini should be tried or whether the case should be closed will be made by the court on May 14.

If Salvini is tried and found guilty, he faces 15 years in prison.

It has already been reported that in July last year, the Italian Senate waived Senator Salvini’s legal immunity so that he could appear in court.
