Minneapolis The accused former police officers in the George Floyd case are allowed to speak to media organizations. Hennepin’s district judge, Peter Cahill, lifted the ban on speaking on Tuesday because it was unfair for the accused not to be able to defend against negative public attention.
Cahill agreed with the defense’s arguments, pointing out that the ban on speaking was not working and that several parties were trying to “sneak around the order.” Some media have spoken with anonymous sources, for example. The judge also announced that he would consider making the Bodycam recordings more widely available, as requested by several media organizations. So far, the recordings could only be viewed on site and with an appointment and not to be distributed.

Black George Floyd had died in police violence in Minneapolis on May 25 after police officer Derek C. pressed his knee on Floyd’s neck for nearly eight minutes, even after the tied-up man had said several times that he couldn’t breathe .

C. was charged with “accidental second degree murder”. According to the laws of the State of Minnesota, this is the case if the perpetrator wanted to commit a serious crime and thereby accidentally killed the victim. He is also charged with “third degree murder”, which roughly corresponds to homicide under German law, and “second degree homicide”. Three other former police officers have been charged with the aid. Everyone was released.
