Program 2022/23: Officially – Bayern opens the season against Frankfurt

AndEuropean league winners Eintracht Frankfurt and champions FC Bayern Munich open the 60th season of the Bundesliga. The first match of the 2022/2023 season, which will be interrupted for two months by the World Cup in Qatar, will take place on August 5 (20:30, the highlight video immediately after the final whistle at WELT) in Frankfurt. This was confirmed by the German Football League (DFL) with the publication of the match schedule on Friday in Frankfurt am Main.

Traditionally, the defending champion can play the first game. The first day of play offers two more highlights with the duel between Champions League participants Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen and the derby between 1. FC Union Berlin and Hertha BSC. Second division champions FC Schalke 04 will start at 1. FC Köln. Werder Bremen’s first division returnees begin with a northern duel at VfL Wolfsburg.

The most important match of the first half of the season between the runners-up BVB and Bayern will be played in Dortmund on matchday 9 (7-9 October 2023). On the 7th day (16-18 September) the district derby between Borussia and Schalke 04 will also take place in Dortmund.

Key dates of the new season: Since the World Cup in the desert state of Qatar cannot take place in the summer for climatic reasons, but only in the winter, it is necessary to take a two-month winter break. Therefore, the first part of the season in the Bundesliga will be interrupted after the 15th matchday and in the 2nd division after the 17th matchday (11-13 November). After the winter break, things will continue in the upper house on January 20 and in the second division on January 27. The season ends on 27/28 of each month. May 2023.

Software instead of pencil: Gone are the days when the Bundesliga schedule with 612 matches in 34 match days was created by hand using a “wrench”. Each club was assigned a number between 1 and 18 and entered into a pattern. This automatically led to meetings. A software developed specifically for creating fixtures simplifies many things, but DFL designers are not superfluous.

More than computer logic: It just doesn’t work according to scheme F. There are so many interests, needs and the unpredictable that need to be taken into consideration. These include problems with supporters (e.g. in high-risk matches), requirements from security bodies, requests from municipalities and cities, stadium operators or media partners of the DFL. In addition, neighboring clubs such as Hertha BSC and 1. FC Union Berlin or FC Schalke and Borussia Dortmund will be staggered for home games. Other major parallel events and holidays must also be included.

European competitions: The schedules of the Bundesliga must also be coordinated with the general schedule of the European football union Uefa and the FIFA world association. Bundesliga clubs are represented in the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League, whose matches are played on weekdays. A club playing in the Europa League on Thursday should not play directly again on Saturday or Sunday if the Champions League is scheduled for next Tuesday.

Cup and Super Cup: Also, there are the DFB Cup dates. Round 1 will be played between 29 July and 1 August next season. That weekend, Saturday 30 July, the Super Cup will also take place between the German champions Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig, winners of the DFB Cup. Your two DFB Cup first round matches are scheduled for August 30th and 31st. The cup final will take place on 3 June 2023 in Berlin.
