PROFILE 4 New Iranian Presidential Candidates: Ebrahim Raisi to Abdolnaser Hemmati

TRIBUNNEWS.COM – Iranians hold presidential elections today, Friday 18 June 2021.

There are 4 candidates who will replace the position Hassan Rouhani.

Hassan Rouhani, a moderate seeking to engage with the West, was unable to run for re-election because he has served two consecutive four-year terms.

Reported BBC.com, polls show Ebrahim Raisi, a conservative Shiite cleric who heads the judiciary, is the crowd’s favourite.

Meanwhile, former moderate central bank governor Abdolnasser Hemmati is his main rival.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei gave his vote on Friday morning in Tehran and urged people to go to the polls.

“Every vote counts … come and vote and vote for your president,” he said.

“This is important for the future of your country,”

Today, there is widespread discontent among Iranians over the economic hardships they have faced since the US scrapped the nuclear deal with Iran three years ago and reimposed crippling sanctions.
