The Office of the Attorney General of the Republic yesterday appreciated the report presented by the United States Department of State, which it claims recognizes many of the important efforts being made by the country’s authorities to prosecute the crime of Trafficking in Persons. He cited that the State Department , in its report for 2019, highlighted as important the efforts made by the country in the prosecution of this crime, being 2019 the year of more investigations.
Likewise, he highlighted the laborious revision of the law on trafficking to eliminate the requirement of force, fraud or coercion of victims under 18 of trafficking for sexual purposes, among other important advances. The institution indicated that the report of the US State Department also recognized that 2019 was the year in which the authorities carried out more investigations in the matter of trafficking in relation to all previous years, observing a substantial increase compared to the years 2018, 2017 A press release indicates that this increase in investigations shows the constant efforts they make and the tangible results in the prosecution of the crime of trafficking in the current administration, highlighting that during 2019 it managed to prosecute 22 trafficking cases, 19 of pimping and obtained 7 convictions.

Referring to the number of sentences obtained, the Office of the Attorney General clarified that the sentences are issued by the Judiciary, and that they are a reflection of the conclusion of processes initiated several years earlier, indicating that many correspond to processes from 2014 and 2015 where the numbers of investigations were minor, which is why there were fewer sentences in 2019. He recalled that this report refers to all institutions, not only to the Attorney General’s Office, the report especially acknowledging the work of the National Police and its Department of Trafficking , by evaluating as positive the prosecutions and training of more tourist police personnel in the area of trafficking and street minors.

With respect to the change of prosecutors referred to in the report, the Office of the Attorney General of the Republic clarified that the United States’ report refers to trafficking prosecutors, and that the only major change of prosecutors in that Specialized Prosecutor’s Office was made in the Holder, because the time established by the Organic Law that governs the public ministry had already expired.
