Process over 57 billion dollars does not unravel mystery inventor bitcoin, or does it? | Economy

The ‘bitcoin lawsuit of the century’ has been dubbed the trial of Australian computer scientist Craig Wright in Florida. The hope of observers was that the true identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, the mysterious mastermind behind the bitcoin system, would be discovered. Self-proclaimed bitcoin inventor Wright largely won the case against him over cryptocurrencies worth some 57 billion dollars (50 billion euros), which now leads him again to claim that he is indeed the inventor. Skeptics consider it a missed opportunity for the real test.

Craig Wright largely triumphed in Florida jury trial on Monday. The trial lasted a whopping three weeks and dealt with the estate of Dave Kleiman, a computer expert and former Wright business partner. The family of the late Kleiman, who passed away in 2013, claimed that he was one of the founders of bitcoin and owned a 1.1 million bitcoin portfolio with Wright that is now worth approximately $57 billion (50 billion euros). The descendants demanded half of that amount.

But the jury cleared Wright almost all the way. However, Wright was convicted of theft of intellectual property belonging to his late friend and must cough up 100 million dollars (88 million euros). A trifle compared to the sum demanded by the counterparty of a total of 600 billion dollars (529 billion euros).

Some crypto investors are very skeptical of Wright’s repeated claims – including under oath – that he is the inventor of bitcoin and consider him a fraud. Had the jury convicted Wright, he would have been forced to come up with the suspected fortune of mythical bitcoin inventor Satoshi Nakamoto. In the eyes of some observers, that would have been the real test.

Wright said after the verdict: “I’ve never been so relieved in all my life.” He added that he will not appeal. He believes that justice has been done and that the verdict proves that he is indeed the creator of Bitcoin. “The jury has clearly found it to be me, otherwise there would have been no verdict,” he said. “And so am I.”
