Probably mastermind behind Mormon murder in Mexico

More than a year after the controversial murder of nine members of a Mexican-American Mormon family in Mexico, a prime suspect has been arrested. According to Mexican authorities, this is the leader of a drug gang.

The victims, three women and six children, were in cars early November last year were riddled with bullets. The case caused quite a stir in both Mexico and the United States, where the family was originally from.

It was soon assumed that there had been a mistake: the family would have been the victim of a drug cartel that had actually targeted a rival gang. President Trump demanded a tough approach to violence from Mexico.

14 arrests

Fourteen suspects were arrested in the case in the past year. The brain behind the massacre was not one of them, according to the Mexican authorities. But this week, this man could still be arrested, says the Public Prosecution Service.

The main suspect was arrested along with two other gang members in a car in the northern state of Chihuahua. They are said to have carried multiple firearms and marijuana.

The US ambassador to Mexico writes on Twitter that the arrests were the result of “excellent cooperation” between the authorities of the two countries, without explaining.
