Kerala Family’s Extraordinary Gift: Prison officer’s Organs to Save Multiple Lives
Kottayam, kerala – October 22, 2025 – In an act of profound generosity amidst heartbreaking loss, the family of A.R. Anish, a dedicated assistant prison officer, has consented to donate nine of his organs, offering a lifeline to numerous individuals in need. The donations are poised to impact patients across multiple hospitals in Kerala.
A.R. anish, 38, of Poozhanad in Thiruvananthapuram, tragically passed away on Wednesday after sustaining a severe head injury on October 17th while returning from a pilgrimage to Sabarimala at Pampa. He was initially treated at a hospital in Pathanamthitta before being transferred to Government Medical college Hospital (MCH) in Kottayam, where he was declared brain dead.
The selfless decision by Anish’s mother, Ambika Kumari, adn sisters will result in the donation of his heart, lungs, both kidneys, pancreas, liver, a hand, and both retinas. This remarkable contribution is expected to save and dramatically improve the lives of several recipients.
Government Medical College Hospital (MCH),Kottayam,will receive one kidney,the heart,lungs,and both retinas for transplantation. Amrita Hospital in Kochi is set to receive a kidney, the pancreas, and a hand. Caritas Hospital in Kottayam will receive the liver.
In a landmark achievement for public healthcare in the state, MCH Kottayam is preparing to perform transplants of the kidney, heart, and lungs on a single day – a first for a government hospital in Kerala. This coordinated effort highlights the growing capacity and commitment to organ transplantation within the state’s public health system.
Kerala’s Minister for Health, Veena George, expressed deep gratitude to Anish’s family for their extraordinary act of compassion. “This is a truly inspiring gesture that will give hope to many,” Minister George stated.
