Princesses not happy with housing in the forest at Soestdijk Palace

Princess Irene writes this in a letter to a councilor from the municipality of Baarn, who read the letter to the city council last night, reports RTV Utrecht.

‘Shocked’

“My sister Margriet and I are shocked to read that the new owners of the Soestdijk estate want to attack the old Borrebos and also use the now empty marechausseterrein to build new homes,” wrote Princess Irene, also on behalf of her sister Margriet.

Apartments and hotel

The new owner of Soestdijk Palace has plans to build apartments and a hotel on the estate in the near future. With this he wants to pay the costs for the renovation of the palace. Local residents are critical of the new construction plans. For example, there are fears of traffic problems if the palace will attract many visitors.

There are also concerns about the degradation of nature. GroenLinks and the Baarnse Independent Party (BOP) are a thorn in the side that houses are to be built in the Borrebos. The party leader of that party had asked the princesses for their opinion, because they had lived on the estate for years.

Support

“At a time when possibilities are being sought for planting forests, it is at the very least undesirable to cut down trees,” the letter continued. “We therefore support those who want to protect the Borrebos and would add that we also think it is important to give nature back to itself on the former barracks site.”

Next week, the city council in Baarn will make a decision about the preliminary design of the zoning plan for Soestdijk Palace and the associated estate.
