Prince William candid about his stint as an air ambulance: “I didn’t want to burden Kate with my mental problems” | Royalty

In his own words, the prince had a hard time with the things he witnessed at the time. “I felt a lot of solidarity for my colleagues, we’ve been through a lot and tried to deal with that pressure and responsibility together. We went to the scene when there was a major emergency, often with a tragic outcome. But when I got home, I wasn’t sure if and how to talk about it. There was a lot on my shoulders, and I took it all home with me. But I didn’t want to burden my wife, Kate, with those things. Everyone wants to shield their loved ones from such conditions. But that way you live two different lives, and you don’t give your family access to a very important part of who you have become. Good assistance for our emergency workers is therefore important.”

That is why the British health service has now set up a special program to assist first responders mentally: Blue Light Together. An initiative of the Royal Foundation, chaired by William and Kate.
