Prince Charles sells his organic farm: one more step towards the British throne?

On August 18, the Prince of Wales announced that he would not renew the lease of his organic farm, the “Home Farm”. For the British press, there is no doubt: the son of Elizabeth II is preparing for his rise to the throne.

On April 21, confined to Windsor, the Queen Elizabeth II celebrates its 94th birthday. The sovereign knows it: her reign will end, one day or another, by coming to an end. His eldest son Charles, he too, understood it well. It must be said that since his birth, the heir to the throne of England has been prepared to become king. Proof that the succession is assured? Tuesday August 18, Clarence House announces the Prince of Wales has declined to renew the lease of his organic farm, the “Home Farm”. The British press is unanimous: Prince Charles is preparing at best for his future job as King.

If the English are so convinced of this, it is because the transfer of the “Home Farm” is not trivial. Especially when you know the Prince of Wales’ love for this 365 hectare agricultural farm, nestled in the green valleys of Gloucestershire in the south-west of England. And especially when you know that he spent almost thirty years transforming the Highgrove estate into one of the most beautiful gardens in the world.

Pioneer of organic farming

In 1986, when Prince Charles announced the conversion of his Highgrove farm to organic farming, more than one initially believed in a spoiled aristocratic whim. What does it matter if he passes for a zany, the father of princes William and Harry is determined to change his ways. Four years later, he created the Duchy Originals label. This allows him to sell products originating from his estate devoted to the cultivation of wheat as well as to the breeding of sheep, oxen and pigs. In the UK, they are now sold by the premium supermarket chain Waitrose. And obviously, everyone is crazy about it: the range is easily exported all over the world, including at Buckingham Palace. “Biscuits, jams, chocolates, cider and bacon are also served in all the royal palaces”, relieves Point.

Thirty years after this unprecedented transition, the bad tongues were wrong. The future King of England was a visionary, while Home Farm is regularly cited as an example by the Soil Association, the British organic association. “In the name of this philosophy of preserving nature to which he is deeply attached, the prince has made the” Home Farm “the laboratory of his ecological convictions”, we still read in the columns of the Point.

“A great therapy”

Passionate about botany and gardening, Prince Charles has never hidden his passion for nature. A nature that soothes him and allows him to forget, for a few moments, his extraordinary destiny. In a BBC report, broadcast in September 2010, Charles even admitted “talking to the trees” and making “patrols” every evening, pruning knife in hand, to trim the hedges: a “formidable therapy”, he said.

One thing is certain: the Duke of Cornwall has a green soul and intends to keep it. Despite the transfer of the operating lease in April 2021, he wants to remain involved in organic farming. He intends in particular to transform the royal domain of Sandringham, private property of the royal family located in Norfolk, into a vast organic sheep farm, his favorite animals. There is no doubt that this umpteenth initiative will green the image of the Crown.
