Prices in the Czech Republic jumped by 3.2 percent – Seznam Zprávy

Consumer prices in the Czech Republic slowed year-on-year growth to 3.2 percent in September from 3.3 percent in August. Prices were pushed up mainly by more expensive alcohol and tobacco, and some foods such as cold cuts or sugar also became more expensive. Higher prices were also for water, sewage and electricity. On the contrary, prices for postal services and telecommunications fell again. Vegetables were cheaper than food. The Czech Statistical Office informed about it today.

“For example, vegetable prices fell by about four percent year on year, while potato prices were about nine percent lower and reached CZK 13.44 / kg. It was the lowest value since September 2018, “said Pavla Šedivá, Head of the CZSO Consumer Price Statistics Department.

Compared to August, consumer prices fell by 0.6 percent. This was mainly due to lower prices in the area of recreation and culture and lower prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages.

“Prices in the Czech Republic are growing significantly faster than in other European Union countries. However, substantial parts of Czech households are declining incomes due to the coronavirus crisis. This will lead to a large-scale decline in living standards in our country, “warns BHS chief economist Štěpán Křeček.

“People without savings, who work in the most affected sectors, such as tourism, hospitality, restaurant, culture and sports, will find themselves in difficult life situations. Without the help of family, municipality or the state, they may lose their roof over their heads and end up on the street, “Křeček points out.
