Preview of the 2nd matchday: Bundesliga – transferred goalscorers, farewell to a hero

Status: 08/11/2022 3:40 p.m

Two freshly changed top scorers in Leipzig and Dortmund, a retiring hero in Frankfurt: everything important for the 2nd matchday.

SC Freiburg – Borussia Dortmund (Friday, 8.30 p.m.)

The representative for Sebastien Haller, who suffers from testicular cancer, was presented to Dortmund during the week – Anthony Modeste comes from Cologne. BVB is absolutely convinced of the short-term solution: “He knows the Bundesliga, speaks German very well and is in top form,” says sports director Sebastian Kehl.

Modeste should be in the starting XI in Freiburg. He could ask his opponent how a new signing scored: Three of the four goals scored by Freiburg on Matchday 1 in Augsburg were scored by newcomers: Michael Gregoritsch, Matthias Ginter and Ritsu Doan scored for the otherwise very convincing Breisgauers .

A striker comes to BVB, a president goes: Reinhard Rauball will not run again in November after a total of 23 years in office. Rauball was elected BVB President for the third time in 2004. During his first term in office from 1979 to 1982, at the age of 32 he went down in history as the youngest president of a Bundesliga soccer team. “Every minute of my tenure I have been proud to be president of this great club,” he said in farewell.

Bayer Leverkusen – FC Augsburg (Saturday, 3.30 p.m.)

Statistically, the hosts should be as relaxed as possible in this game: Bayer Leverkusen have never lost a Bundesliga game against FC Augsburg. The two teams met 22 times – no other Bundesliga duel has happened so often without one of the two opponents losing. The Werkself have won 15 duels, including seven of the last eight games. A favorite opponent at the right time after losing the DFB Cup against Elversberg and losing the opening match against Dortmund.

However, the hosts have to do without their keeper: Lukas Hradecky had to leave the field prematurely at the season opener in Dortmund due to a handball in front of his penalty area shortly before the end and is suspended. Andrey Lunev will come to his second Bundesliga game for him. Russian goalkeepers in the Bundesliga are real rarities, ahead of Lunev only Stanislav Cherchesov scored in 57 Bundesliga games for Dynamo Dresden from 1993 to 1995.

RB Leipzig – 1. FC Cologne (Saturday, 3.30 p.m.)

It’s nice when you still have goals: “I want to be the first Leipzig bull to break the 100-goal mark,” said Timo Werner on his return to RB. He already has 90 competitive goals on his credit side and he wants to reach three figures this season if possible. Because by the way, he wants to recommend himself with good performances for the Winter World Championships in Qatar.

Tedesco: “I’m glad he’s here.”

8/11/2022 5:01 p.m

He rarely managed to do that at Chelsea. In the past Premier League season, under team manager Thomas Tuchel, he made 15 starts and only four goals. That’s probably why he doesn’t want to raise expectations too much. He comes “not as a messiah, but as Timo Werner.” Sounds right.

In the case of Cologne, on the other hand, the top scorer of recent years is history again: Anthony Modeste signed on in Dortmund during the week. He confidently countered the displeasure of the Cologne supporters about the farewell with the statements customary in the industry: He will always carry the club in his heart, he is not leaving because of the money. From Cologne’s point of view, the rumored fee of five million euros is more comforting than the farewell building blocks. Those responsible have not yet revealed whether FC will be active again on the transfer market. On Saturday (13.08.2222) Jan Thielmann and youngster Florian Dietz should do it again.

TSG Hoffenheim – VfL Bochum (Saturday, 3.30 p.m.)

Sweet memories in the Kraichgau: On March 6th of this year, TSG Hoffenheim won at 1. FC Köln and climbed up to a place in the Champions League. It was the Kraichgauer’s last win in the Bundesliga so far, since then the team has been without a win for ten games and consequently gambled away international business. The premiere of new coach André Breitenreiter on the first day of the game in Gladbach also went wrong.

The last three duels against Hoffenheim, however, all went to Bochum, and VfL also won both games last season. In order to increase the chance of a fourth win in a row, Bochum have added to the transfer market again: Union Berlin defender Dominique Heintz is on loan until the end of the season. VfL Managing Director Sebastian Schindzielorz described the 28-year-old as “tall, robust, strong in a duel, a leader”.

Hertha BSC – Eintracht Frankfurt (Saturday, 3.30 p.m.)

David Alaba and Karim Benzema were the spoilsports on Wednesday evening (08/10/2022): The former Bayern professional and the French striker shot Real Madrid to the Supercup victory and destroyed the dream of Eintracht Frankfurt’s next coup. A week that was described as eventful and diplomatic for the Hessians continues: In addition to the highlight game in Helsinki, an era on the left wing ended this week: Filip Kostic leaves Eintracht for Turin.

The Serb has shaped the game for years. “Filip made history with the club and achieved a lot,” says goalkeeper Kevin Trapp. The two goals in the sensation in Barcelona in the past Europa League season, the pictures with the silver pot – Kostic will be remembered as a hero. “I don’t begrudge him that,” says coach Oliver Glasner.

After the botched start of the season with the defeat in the derby at Union, the hopes of the Berliners are on a new signing. Former Mainzer Jean-Paul Boëtius should provide impetus in midfield. At least colleague Kevin-Prince Boateng is already convinced: “He’s a buffalo and he’s also good with the ball,” said Boateng. And: “He laughed the whole time today.” She would also like to laugh collectively again at the recently mostly joyless Hertha.

Werder Bremen – VfB Stuttgart (Saturday, 3.30 p.m.)

Game one after the ugly incidents at Bremen’s season opener in Wolfsburg: They were 2-2 numerous supporters of the Hanseatic League had already been checked disproportionately by the police at the Wolfsburg train station. That had caused outraged reactions – not only in Bremen: “I looked at the pictures of the mission. I’m dismayed. It’s a shame for the football location of Wolfsburg,” said Wolfsburg’s sports director Jörg Schmadtke.

At the home premiere after a year of being away from the Bundesliga against VfB Stuttgart, the Bremen fans would like to focus on the sport again. Both teams were able to convince on the first day of the game, Bremen were about to win 2-2 in Wolfsburg at the start, Stuttgart lost a point from Champions League participants RB Leipzig.

The outstanding man for the Swabians was keeper Florian Müller. 27 shots on goal flew in the direction of the VfB box, eight of which Müller was able to parry. In Bremen, too, there should be a lot going on in the goal areas, at least when you look at the statistics: In 53 guest appearances by Stuttgart in Bremen there has not yet been a goalless draw.

Schalke 04 – Borussia Mönchengladbach (Saturday, 6.30 p.m.)

The Schalke hope has a name: Simon Terodde. The record goalscorer in the 2nd Bundesliga can be there against Mönchengladbach. “Simon is in full training, we can fall back on him. That gives us a lot of opportunities, we can be very variable up front,” said coach Frank Kramer.

At the start of the season, the “Royal Blues” had lost 3-1 in Cologne – partly because of several VAR decisions, all of which were to Schalke’s disadvantage. “Cologne is ticked off,” Kramer assures. The hosts still have to do without Dominick Drexler. The midfielder has been suspended for two games following his red card in Cologne as a result of a VA assignment.

All is well with the guests: After the opening win against Hoffenheim, national player Jonas Hofmann also extended his contract early on Monday until 2025. Now people on the Lower Rhine are hoping that Hofmann’s whereabouts and the previous extension of Alassane Plea will also have a signal effect on the other key players with expiring contracts like Marcus Thuram, Ramy Bensebaini and Yann Sommer. “We are in very good talks, but I’m not a clairvoyant,” says sporting director Roland Virkus. A continued successful start to the season would certainly not be a bad basis for argumentation.

FSV Mainz 05 – Union Berlin (Sunday, 3.30 p.m.)

The first day of the game was a good one for Mainz coach Bo Svensson: his team won 2-1 at VfL Bochum – and the Dane didn’t see a yellow card. Last season he was the leader among coaches with seven warnings, and on Matchday 20 in Fürth he was the first coach in Bundesliga history to serve out a yellow card suspension. A record that he would like to drop. But not at any price: “It is my wish to improve myself – but at the same time I don’t want to lose what makes me special,” he told “Sport Bild”.

He could learn from his colleagues at the Union Bank how to get by without yellow cards. The Swiss Urs Fischer has not seen a single yellow card in his two-year Bundesliga career. And an away game in Mainz should only get his pulse racing: On November 9, 2019, Fischer and Union celebrated the first away win in their Bundesliga history in Mainz. Union captain Christopher Trimmel prepared all three goals.

Bayern Munich – VfL Wolfsburg (Sunday, 5.30 p.m.)

Niko Kovac is a realist. “We’ll get our chances,” said the Wolfsburg coach before the guest appearance in Munich, adding hastily: “Even if there won’t be too many.” Exactly 1,015 days after his involuntary departure from FCB, Kovac is seeing his former club again for the first time. From the summer of 2018 to November 2019 he was the coach of the record champions. Fun fact: when Bayern lost to Liverpool in the Champions League round of 16 in 2019, current Bayern striker Sadio Mané scored twice.

Incidentally, historically, the Wolfsburg have almost no chance: The Lower Saxony have only been able to score two points in 25 appearances in Munich so far, the goal record is devastating at 16:73 from a Wolfsburg point of view. Bayern’s 6-1 away win in Frankfurt on Matchday 1 shows that Bayern are in excellent early form. “We have ideas to withstand the Bayern pressing,” promises Kovac. Let’s see if the ideas find their way onto the pitch and into the minds of Wolfsburg.
